I don't know how many people on here have actually driven a Cooper S, but I think they would be shocked at how much of a car it actually is.

With the HHR, I think the ONLY thing you will like better is the storage and maybe the looks

I bought my '06 new as a vacation car and a grocery getter. But the majority of mileage is from trips across and around the U.S. The longest trip was about 8500 miles....made a round trip of the country.

Found the car to do everything I was needing. It had enough space (one rear seat folded) to pack everything for the wife and I and we still found a couple of antiques to haul home. Averaged just a little over 30 MPG for the entire trip, IIRC. Best was a little over 36 MPG down the eastern side of Wyoming, starting from Sundance (near Devil's Tower) and going to Cheyenne.

Bottom line...IMO....great car for travel.

Thanks for all the comments. I was surprised at the comfort comparisons with my MINI. I drove a 2008 HHR and it was like driving on a cloud compared to feeling every crack in the road in my MINI. Sounds like the SS has the performance I expected to miss.

I've had my 2011 LT for a few weeks now and today was the first time I took it out of town. I drove 376 miles from my home outside Boise, over the mountains to Stanley and Redfish lake for a picnic lunch and then down through Sun Valley and back home. There was every type of driving from twisting mountain roads to long straight cruising to freeway driving. The temperature was mostly in the upper 80s and lower 90s, but went over 100 through the desert towards the end of the trip. When I got back I pumped in 11 and a half gallons for 32.7 mpg.

The car was a champ. I was very impressed. It was comfortable, had enough power to pass a dump truck going uphill at high altitude over Galena summit, easily carved the corners in the winding roads, and got great gas mileage to boot. I think it will make a great cruiser for the type of driving I do.
