New from Nebraska
Hello all. I am new to the site today, though I have had my HHR since August of 2009. It is a 2008 that I got as a program car. It has been great to me until this week. The motor fan would not shut off even after I turned the car off and it believed that it was over heating after only driving a couple of miles. Well, I planned to get it checked out, but it wouldn't wait.
After sitting stranded on the side of the highway in nowhere Wyoming for over 2 hours I finally got a tow to the local Chevy dealer. The mechanic there believes that it could be a shaft seal (?)
I admit, I am a girl and quite honestly don't know a lot about what they are telling me. I am still covered by the power trane warranty, but the mechanic seems to think they are going to balk because I (my husband) did the maintenance himself.
I would sure take any tips from anyone who has dealt with issues like this, or anyone who has had to use that warranty. I am glad I found this group and hope that I can have my baby back soon.

jstolli Welcome-
The electric fan set-up is made to continue running after shut off, but only if you reach a certain hi temp.. Then it will stop on it's own.
But if you are overheating, it's a whole different deal..
Have you checked to make sure you are not low on DexCool antifreeze ? That should be checked regularly, like the oil level..
How does the mechanic know your man is doing the service ? That should not matter anyhow.. Long as that hasn't caused the problem..
PS: Here's a list of the Powertrain Coverage

Welcome to the forum.
Doing your own maintenence should not be an issue unless the dealer doubts it was actually done.
Always keep receipts of any products you purchased such as oil, filters etc. Also log down any work done in your owners manual in the maintence section. Date and mileage should also be noted.
As I learned in EMT school 20 years ago:" If it isn't written down, then it didn't happen."

Thanks all. I have checked the coolant regularly, it is always kept full. and I understand about the "if it isn't written down, it didn't happen" I just hope that when he looks at it he can tell that the maintenance was done, and that it is not mistreated or anything like that. I have to call today to see if they have even gotten it torn down and then if they have contacted Chevy about it yet....Sleeper, Thanks for the list of power train coverage. that is helpful!

Also, Like with mine, Onstar actually has a log section thats free with membership online, and that way, all u gotta do is throw all ur receipts in a box, and know that you did it, at the right time, since onstar pulls your mileage. :) FYI, i love the new onstar. Had an old 01 impala and it got stolen and onstar couldnt find anything. But now I know they can! :)
