Anti Hunters DONT LOOK! Deer on a HHR
#22
Opening gun day for us was Saturday. It was blowing from the North at 30MPH and nothing moved all day, but I did see 1 really nervous doe at dusk. During the night the wind shifted more out of the NW which was better as my blind was at the edge of a cedar forest overlooking a hilly pasture which was now somewhat sheltered from the wind. It was snowing on and off and at about 7:20, 15 minutes past shoot-able light, he came out of the woods across from me at about 150 yards as a single. He was walking slowly at an angle slightly towards me. When he got to about 100 yards he turned and started walking at an angle away from me so I popped him before he scented me. Angled shot just behind the right shoulder through the heart and lungs. Bullet did not exit, but can feel it under the hide on the left side in the ribs. He jumped and ran about 25 yards and then stopped, just as I was about to let number 2 go, he fell over. Funny thing was that after staring at that pasture for over a day, when I went to get him it still took me about 20 minutes to find him as it sure does look different from that side.... the pasture hadn't been used for many years, so the grass was waist deep, and although it had been snowing not much was sticking (about 33 degees).
After gutting, I opened his stomach and it was full of rye grass and apples. (I know that may be too much info for some)

I am hoping to get 80 - 100 pounds. We are processing it tonight.
Since my wife and kids all like venison, an average deer will last 4 to 6 months. We obviously don't eat it every night. If I get 2 deer, they can last up to a year.
