me annoying the phrase - to compete with the BMW 3 Series.
Guys, I understand that in the United States The European car - it's very cool and stylish (in Russia BMW is also very popular - among the criminals, morons and thugs road). But I think that the Cadillac's desire to be like a BMW - not in favor of the Cadillac.
Cadillac's image - a big, strong, imposing, pricey (solid).
BMW image - expensive too (but the show), bustling, noisy, brash and rotten inside.
When I hear "Cadillac wants to be like a BMW", I think: "Solid gray-haired banker in an expensive suit wants to be like a black rapper with gold chains, with bulging eyes and splayed fingers."
It's funny and sad.

geg, you have completely missed the point. There is a big difference between 'competing' with the BMW 3-Series, which has to do with sales, and 'wants to be like a BMW', which, I guess, would mean those things described in your post.......

really? maybe ...
If I did wrong - I bring my apologies.
But this phrase:
Cadillac is looking to compete with the BMW 3-Series with the Cadillac ATS. The ATS should see the new 3.0 liter twin turbo LF3 V6 to compete with BMW's 335i. The turbo 2.0 will likely take on the 325i and 328i.
I correctly translated the word "compete" - competition, competitive confrontation? If correct - Cadillac wants to implement a new engine to counter the BMW 3-Series. Choosing his rival, Cadillac treats herself to him. He said: "I want to be much better than the BMW or at least the same." But Cadillac is much better than the BMW already now.
In my view (a view of an alien, of course) is the Cadillac for a higher status. Competition from BMW - the movement of one (2? 3?) Level to the bottom.
Cadillac - Car respectable men. BMW - the car for street gang, especially - third series. Maybe - in the United States is different.

When they state "compete" here, it is sales. They want potential buyers to know there is a choice here and hopefully, get them into a Cadillac dealership verses a BMW one.
