Must be a DeNiro fan. Thats cool because I personally can watch all of those films over and over. Nice Selection! How about Godfather 1 and 2. Sorry Capt. not trying to steal thread!

What up, CH -

I must say, I'm split on my answer. While I absolutely agree that it is one of the best films ever made, I don't think it would rank in my Top 10 favorite films, were I to create such a list based on my personal preferences. It's great, don't get me wrong, and I've seen the original and the redux. War movies just aren't my favorite genre.

That being said, I took a literary criticism class during my undergrad years ago, and we extensively deconstructed Conrad's "Heart of Darkness". CH - if you haven't already done so, read it; it will give you a whole new angle on the movie. So, in summary, it is indeed one of the greatest flicks ever. Brando, Sheen, Hopper, Ford, etc. - this film highlights them all early in their careers (except Brando, of course).

Col. Kilgore is one sick bastard in that great movie. Even Lee Ermey made an appearance in it.

Patton is another fav, as is The Patriot (Mel Gibson), Full Metal Jacket...the list goes on and on

I could rewatch D.H. but ugh, I actually bought a used laser disc "in the day" of Coming Home and it was just painful. Apoc. will always be over the top but still keep me coming back over and over.

But C.H., which version --- the l-o-o-n-n-g- one??

Alltime favs - for me are more like Poltergeist, Close Encounters, and Lost Boys.

Both. They are both long. The original one runs a little over 2 1/2 hours and Redux clocks in over 3 hours 20 minutes. The film is so good I don't mind the length. There are some other great movies mentioned by everyone. Especially Full Metal Jacket, The Deer Hunter, and the Godfather films. War films usually aren't my thing but Apocalypse Now is so much more than your average war film. It definitely has one of the most memorable ending scenes ever. I love Sheen's monologue throughout the film while he was looking over Kurtz's dossier. It works really well for the film. It's like a story within a story detailing Captain Willard's personal quest, feelings, and thoughts. I have to agree with Harpozep about Brando's voice though.

I don't watch a lot of movies, but I wil always watch a military flick and I did like Apocalypse Now, Duval's character was outstanding and some of the little details, the everyday combat stuff was incredible. The air cav guys wearing their cavalry hats etc... There was a mention earlier in this thread about Saving Private Ryan, the combat scenes where really accurate, the damned sound of the rounds passing and hitting was spot on...I do have one problem wth watching military movies, I forget that they are movies and start complaining about the details, improper uniforms etc...

While my vote says it is one of the greatest movies ever, as I know it is, but it was never really my kind of movie.

When it comes to Vietnam War movies, I have got to go with Full Metal Jacket. It's a war movie that gets its point accross with beating you over the head (Platoon anyone?).

The famous Duvall scenes were BY FAR my favorite parts of Apocalypse Now!
