My favorite has to be the Big Boy from Shoney's in the 60's and 70's. Double beef patty with special sauce and a coke. Friday night, cruising, talking, street racing, oh my............what memories.
Had one couple years ago, just wasn't what I remember. Shoneys is Big Boy in some places, but then their Burgers were'nt as good as Shoney's Burgers, Plus they had the Slim Jim, but that was a Ham and Cheese sandwhich.

I'm not huge on beef in the first place, but there are times when In-N-Out is the food of the gods. There are bigger, fancier, quicker to get burgers out there, but there is just something about the Double Double. If you're a California person, and grew up with that place, the In-N-Out (In-and-Wait, really) Burger is a mystical, holy thing.

In-N-Out is based in California, though I believe they now have a store or two in Nevada and in Arizona, but that's it. Their burgers are not the huge, two fisted type you'll get at places like Red Robin (although the Double Double is hardly small, either), but are old time 1950s style diner grill burgers. All they make is burgers, fries, and shakes. The fries are an odd creature, too, as they are very different from, say, McDonald's fries. The texture is quite different, since they're made from potatoes that are simply sliced up and dunked in the oil...no frozen half-pre-cooked fries, etc. They're made from raw potatoes and hot oil and that's it; the crispiness of most fries comes from getting some of the starch out of the potatoes before cooking, and cooking them twice. I think I've read that McDonalds actually puts some sort of somewhat sugary glaze on their fries before cooking, too, to help get that crispy exterior going on. In-n-Out's fries are a lot different in texture, but man...when you get them good, they are unholy good!
I still can't figure out why the wait time is so long to get your food though, when all they are making is burgers and fries!
Another burger I like a lot that is more like the type you get at Red Robin and places like that is the mushroom burger from Ruby's. I think that's another California-only chain, though, so not too many of ya will know that place, either!

When you're in the In-&-Out....ask for the "Animal". It's not on the menu, but people in the know.....know.
And I believe, In-&-Out is the last of the "biggies" to slice raw potatoes, as needed, and deep fry.
Tomorrow's lunch
