The head of GM is scheduled to meet with the head of Toyota, so Toyota may be in the mix as well.

UPDATE: GM May Seek Toyota Help To Turn Around Business-KyodoLast update: 10/29/2008 12:06:47 PM(Updates with possible Wagoner visit to Japan, details) DOW JONES NEWSWIRES Struggling U.S. auto maker General Motors Corp. (GM) is expected to ask for help from Toyota Motor Corp. (7203.TO) in turning around its business, Kyodo News reported Wednesday, citing sources familiar with the plan. GM Chairman Rick Wagoner is considering visiting Japan soon and meeting with Toyota's leadership to discuss the plan, the sources said. Toyota is expected to consider quick fixes for the cash-strapped GM, including buying up its assets, to help it secure sufficient business funding. The executives of the world's two biggest automakers may also discuss expanded business partnerships, including Toyota making fuel efficient compact cars for GM on an original equipment manufacturing (OEM) basis and providing hybrid-car technologies to the U.S. carmaker, the sources said. Toyota and GM have had close partnerships in high-tech areas since 1984, when they set up a joint auto production venture in California. -Dow Jones Newswires; 201-938-5500

They shared the Corolla/Nova and now the Matrix and the Vibe. Also the Cavalier was sold in Japan by Toyota in some strange deal butnot much else is shared with these companies.

It will be interesting to if there is anything to this story. These are strange times.

Sounds like the brands are all related through some unholy unions .

This - however confusing - has been helpful. Can we keep this open and we can keep each other abreast of it?

I don't understand why the news networks are only talking about GM - Chrysler and not any of these other possible alliances. But I do understand that it's all about the money and not about what drivers want/need -- unless the 2 dovetail.

I also heard that the HHR's last year may be 2010 - any evidence pro/con?

I think the merger would be a mistake much like the Sprint - Nextel and XM - Sirius merges. Have you seen the stock on those two lately? Also heard that there will be NO gov't cash to pay for a merger.

don't know if will be a mistake, but if one fails then the job losses would be more than if merged. michigans economy can't afford for either. We are in such bad shape. unemployment near 9%,businesses closing everywhere including car dealerships.

I think a chrysler product with GMs drivetrain would own the market (in all classes)
