Bob Lutz is back! Part time at least...

We are just the same kind of odd lots that are attacted to the HHR.
I have had mine since new in 1985 and just last year took a top 5 award at the Pontiac nationals out of 550+ Pontiacs.
The last dealer that touched mine in the 90's to to the recall on the exhaust manifold said it had been years since they had seen one in this condition. The tech said it was nice to work on one like this and came out to see me when I picked it up.
Keep in mind it was my only car for a couple of years even in the winter too and I have done several national show and don't trailer it.
The Fiero web site gets some Corvair people who own Fiero's too.

I've had my 87 Fiero GT since new and ran The Hot Rod Power tour partial in '07, long haul in '09 and '11 and drove the 88 GT long haul in '05 and '10. Old toys and somewhere to spend money on keeping the economy running.
Big handling difference between the HHR and Fieros.

I define a good handling car by how easy it make it to go fast.
My SS is a very easy car to drive fast and requires little effort. My 85 Fiero even with the Herb Adams suspension kit has the ability to go fast but you have to work for it. The car is neutral with the bigger front and added rear bars but the suspension on the pre 88 cars just feels like you are driving two different cars at once. The front and rear work at their own rates and bump steer is not a good thing here. On a smooth surface it is easy to drive but in the real world you have to keep the front and back working in harmony.
My Fiero is like new as it only has 44,000 miles and still drives like the day I bought it.
Before the rear bar it was a mess. You get into a corner too hot and even with a hard turn on the wheel it would just slide with understeer.
GM did a hell of a job on the SS and tuned it so it was not just good on the track but on the back roads where it spends 90% of its time.

I've always considered my HHR-SS as a small SUV, or a small SUV on steroids. It's basically a SUV with pronounced fenders, to resemble a 1949 chevrolet suburban[reto look]. Can't really call it a wagon, or a hatch, as it does'nt seems to fit either one.
Off topic: Speaking of hatches. If it were availabale[and its not, for sure], I would like to have a Renault Megane Trophy[which by the way just set the FWD record at Nurburingring]. Nasy looking hatch for sure. "Moon"

843de: Being a artist and liking a different look[hince a HHR-SS], The Renault Megane Trophy is the nastiest looking hatch, I've laid my eyes on. It's not available anyway, at any price here. Just saying I really like the look.
Many moons ago, I dreamed of being a car designer, and still are always drawing up car stuff[old, new, and off the wall stuff], so I like a different look in cars. "Moon"

I'll agree that the Renault is an aggressive design and pretty mean looking(photo below for those wondering what we're talking about), but to my eyes the perfect French car is still the Maserati powered Citroen SM(another photo below).
As far as liking vehicles with a different look, I'm right there with you. I like vehicles that are out of step with the norm, an HHR is about as far from the Camry/Accord/Taurus/Bland as Vanilla Pudding LX as you can get.
