Chevrolet Unveils Aveo RS
#51
As any cop if he would rather be in a new GM product or an old Crown Vic.....get back to me...
GM's problem is that their quality is not consistent. When the Aveo first came out there was nearly a class action lawsuit because the first 3 years of Aveo got MUCH WORSE than the advertised/EPA fuel mileage.

Doesn't the preference for the old crown vic have as much to do with the fact that it is larger and RWD as anything else? The cops haul a lot of crap around and complain that the newer cars are too small.

LOL....just be familiar with the market and not have a built in prejudice. Look at the MANY post just on this forum about how disappointed HHR owners are about depreciation. Compare various models on car sites dedicated to estimation of used car values....the evidence points to American branded automobiles have a much worse resale value than Toyota or Honda. Ford has improved drastically in perceived and actual quality and retained value. Notice I did not say these brands were perfect, just better built overall.

Now dealing with cops, yes, ask them today and they want the Crown Vic if they have to be in a RWD 4dr patrol or pursuit car. Why, cause it's currently the only thing available. Now ask them if they would rather have the currenlty Crown Vic, or if they would rather still have the old Caprice with the LT1. Most cops hated when the Caprice line ended. That forced them in to the Crown Vic. But the future is coming on that line also. Actually already is, just hasn't made it to the US yet.
Now the Impala. Dated, boring, maybe. Junk, only issue I see is the rear trailing arm issue that had a recall for eating rear tires. We probably have about 500-600 in the state. Several thousand across the country. Junk, hardly. And a good bit of these are indeed cop cars.
All manufactors have problems, yes even Honda. I've owned 4, I have some experience with them. Best I had was an 88 Civic. Great car with no frills. Most boring one I had was a 99 Accord EX, shortest ownership of a car I've ever had.

Yeah, don't bother trying to pull of the cop car as being GM as to why they hate it... like everyone else said, it's rear wheel drive. There are still many smaller police that still use the Caprice to this day!
We'll see what happens when the Caprice comes to the US for cops in a few years.

The deal is there is no more, Chevy Opel, Daewoo cars. All gm cars are now being done with imput from all divisions world wide to sell in all markets. The best people from each company are now doing what they can with all the resources of GM not just what they have local.
This car will be built world wide including Michigan.
This is a larger car than the Aveo it replaces.
As for value it remains to be determind. Value is placed on cars by supply and demand.
The fact that the HHR is sold to fleet sales in large numbers and the fact you can buy a new one cheap has a lot to do with the low resale. While demand for used ones are good there is a large supply coming in from Enterprise.
Honda dose little with fleet sales and this is the key to their resale value along with demand.
Howmuch demand this car gives as well as if GM does fleet sales. THey have been cutting back on most new models since they do not need the cash flow from unsold cars like they used too.
As for the Impala it is a good no thrills car. but it like the rest of the W bodies is a very old car in need of a update. We should see it in 2013 as a 2014.
Note GM also has the RWD Chevy [G8/Holden] coming in 2011 as a police crusier and a shorter wheel base high end car in 2012. It will be limited but should do well. They are calling it a 4 door Vette so expect it to be more GXP like.
We also might just get the Ute too.

Most of the Japanese makes, built in the US or elsewhere, have higher standards for the parts that vendors supply. That adds to the final fit and finish and leads to less variation on the assembly line and it only follows, fewer warranty claims.
This isn't just GM, but American manufacturing in general. Make a lot of them...make it cheap...that philosophy only goes so far before the actual quality suffers.
Another problem is that US automobile companys have not yet figured out how to deliver quality AND price but still make a profit that keeps the company in the black. It's a long process. For instance the 1991 Ford Escort[heavy Mazda influence] lost $100 for the company every time a new one was sold.....You have to balance that out with larger more profitable cars and trucks. Government rules and regulations have driven many plants out of the country and the new CAFE standards are gonna kill the V8 and large cars and trucks. The next decade will not be an easy one for US car companys!

Actually, I believe the last few posts before Brad's had nothing whatsoever to do with the Aveo...
In fact, if you want to get back to topic, you'd have to go to the last page...
*EDIT* To make this post on topic, I do like the new Aveo concept. Much better than it's predecessor.
