I've had my D70 for over 5 years and never had a problem. The battery lasts weeks even if you leave it turned on. I keep an extra battery just so I can take pictures and not worry about it. The quality of pictures is remarkable...my kids take excellent pics with this camera. The photo programs that come with the Nikon are top notch also. I went to the store initially to buy the Canon, but the owner told me the little extra for the Nikon was well worth it. He was right this camera is amazing.

i dunno if i should go for a d90 since it does have a new edge on the d80
or just save my money, get the d40 thats almost just as good for like half
the price

Thank you! I was surprised a camera thread got to page two without dpreview.com showing up.

It's a great site with great, accurate info.

I reccomend Olympus

I reccomend Olympus. When I bought my first DSLR about 5 years ago I knew nothing about them. So I did some research and Olympus seems to give you the most for the money. No camera is perfect but the Olympus cameras are a little smaller, lighter and the lenses have more reach. They are known for their good picture quality and colors.
Nikon and Canon definatly are bigger and sell more cameras but I think you get much more for your money with Olympus. The 510 / 520 series are really one of the best values there is in a camera right now. Olympus was the first DSLR with live veiew, the first with movable screen, and it has built in image stabilization that works. It was the first and still the only one with dust reduction that really works. They think a little outside the box and the one others are copying. Curly

My wife does photography on the side (weddings, kids, pets, etc.) and we have a D80 and a D300 (very expensive) but it has more than paid for itself. The D80 is a great somewhat affordable camera and is what we use for general photography purposes.
