Of what I have paid for insurance, I have hardly ever used it. In fact, I try to stay healthy so I don't have to use it. It seems like most of what I'm paying is pure profit. I rather have have the money benefit another person's health rather than the big business bank accounts.

But...chingchonger....you can say that about any insurance.

For example, I have paid house insurance for 40+ years, have never made or collected on a claim.

I have paid car insurance for more than the 40 years. Collected once, but it does not even come close to the total premiums I paid through the years.

Life insurance...etc. (most people quit paying after a certain amount of time).

Boat Insurance, etc.

RV insurance, etc.

etc. etc. etc

Sometimes people are living within there means which is well below yours and my standard of life and still poor. People driving a 20 - 30 year old 500 dollar beater car because that’s all they can afford if they even own a car, not owning a cell because it's an additional expense they don't need, not having cable or internet because they can't afford them, wearing the same clothes they've owned for 10 years because new clothes are too expensive, and still having a hard time making ends meet. People that make too much money to qualify for government assistance (so they pay for their healthcare like you and me) but don't make enough to keep up with the rising costs of gas, health care, food, taxes, and housing. To people like that the only choices they have to make is whether they are going to feed their family that week or pay their gas and electric bill to keep the power on and their family warm. Like previously stated I grew up supported by our system in the ghetto so unfortunately I got to feel and experience poverty first hand and know what it's like to be poor. I busted my ass so I didn't have to live like that my whole life. I also know a lot of good people that work hard, do their best, and live within their means but are still poor due to our Capitalist system and our economy. I could go on with this forever but like I said a couple posts ago you've obviously never lived in poverty so I wouldn't expect you to truly know anything about it or understand. Let me guess you a right wing Republican too?
Just a few years ago i was one of those people way below the poverty line. I was making 8.50 an hour with no benefits and no overtime. Yeah it was pretty much the hardest time in my life, it sucked but i knew it was my fault and MY RESPOSIBILITY to get myself out of it. I would now consider myself to be dead in the middle of the middle class. The only thing holding these people down for years or decades are there own choices and actions, and i feel i am one am extremely qualified to speak about this subject. Back to the main subject, socialism is not the answer and bigger fed gov is def out of the question.

Health is a necessity. You don't need to own a house, car, boat, RV, etc.

I can afford my health insurance now because I'm single with no family, but how much would you say a family of four would have to pay for health insurance each month? This is where I see price of insurance going out of hand and costing too much.

Let's say there's a fellow that is married and has two kids, a dog, and a house with a picket fence. He earns a decent amount of money and lives a moderate lifestyle with two cars, a house mortgage, and health benefits for his entire family. He suddenly gets really sick and has to get lots of treatment. He'll spend tons of money on co-pays and deductibles, and he can't work. Medical bills are adding up. He sell his house and cars. Move into a cheap tiny apartment in a bad neighborhood with awful living conditions. Wife who hasn't worked since she married has to go find a job that pays crap. They also need to hire a babysitter or get the kids in daycare since the father is in no condition to care for his family. Wife has to cook, clean, work, and take care of everyone. Husband's health is not getting much better because his family is not able to afford all of the necessary treatments. Wife finally goes crazy and kills them all. She gets placed in a mental institute. She is later released back into the world with nothing. She becomes another homeless person begging for money on the street corner and contributing nothing to society. If they only had universal health care.

What I'm getting at is that the high cost of heath care can put a family into poverty and tear a family apart. I'm sure there are other ways to explain it, but I think you get the gist of it.

True, but I do on some of them.......because I'm a capitalist and know how to manipulate the system. But a car is almost a necessity to get to and from work. I believe the argument is what fits the best utility.

Most if not all medical policies have a maximum out of pocket expense. If you have children it's doubly important to have medical insurance. A family policy costs about $500 a month. Most families have 2 car payments that are more then that. They have credit card debt that is nearly that.

I will say it again those who earn less then 25K a year can get Medicare for their kids. Those who are impoverished get free health care. Those who earn $40k a year (avg family income) can afford health car if they really wanted to.

Thats about $2500 a month net.

Rent or mortgage/insurance should be no more then $800 at that income Utilities/Cable/Phone maybe $200 Car insurance $200 Food $400 Medical Insurance $200

Total. 2000 Still leaves $500 for savings and extras.

The point is it CAN be done. People are taking home a lot more then that and claiming they cannot afford medical insurance. They can They CHOOSE other things as more important. Its all about priorities and sacrifice,

Maybe if you're single in your area. I'll agree that some of your numbers can be met if your single, don't mind living in an okay but not the greatest of areas, don't eat out or have steak and lobster every night, own a car, plus have a good driving record and have went through your age reductions but the utilities / cable / phone and medical insurance numbers are way off or at least they are for this area of the country and you left out gas for your car which is just rising higher and higher. Last winter I averaged like $600 per month for gas and electric being conservative on my energy consumption, taking all winter precautions such as sealing drafts, and with my wood burning stove going most of the time to provide heat. Even when I was single years ago and was hardly ever home my gas and electric bills still averaged around $200 - $300 per month. I think the cheapest basic plans offered by both the cable company and phone company in my area are both around $40 per month without fees and taxes. The cheapest health care plan offered where I work is around $70 per week for a single person and it has no prescription coverage other than diabetic supplies and high co-pays. If you want the best plan with prescription coverage and low co-pays it is like $140 per week for a single person. Depending on the size of the family that policy goes to over $200 per week. You’re pulling figures directly out of you ass now to try and prove a moot point. Not all situations are the same so you can't treat everyone’s situation the same if you understand what I'm saying. What your dad taught you works for you but it doesn't fit everyones model of life. So in your train of thought a single mother of four who was a stay at home mom until her husband decided to leave her for another woman forcing her into a $7.50 an hour job having no prior experience or training that is struggling to feed and provide for her family is a bad financial strategist and lives in excess? Sometimes good people end up in bad situations.

The point is it CAN be done. People are taking home a lot more then that and claiming they cannot afford medical insurance. They can They CHOOSE other things as more important. Its all about priorities and sacrifice,
RANT:
Yeah, "Priorities and sacrifice" Tell that to those self-serving sycophant congress dolts who rarely work and feel entitled to "their seat" while voting themselves payraises!
Poop flows from the top down and those self righteous indignant bags of&%$^K# serve as fine examples of what is wrong with this countries values. These folks do all they can to simply stay where they are and show their pearly whites. Stalling and being ineffective at actually doing their job brings us all down. They "sacrifice" nothing and show us their "priorities" are to self and party. Top down theory at its worst. Public service, yeah right............ But I digress.....

Back on topic:

I employ people at my small business. I looked, pooled and worked hard at trying to keep and find the best single and group health insurance.
One of my guys hit age 50 and the premium doubled. Same price everywhere. I had to stop offering health insurance and gave him a small raise. His premium alone was over $500.00 /month with no real "preexisting condition" etc. Just an age thing. Get older, they charge ya more. The way of the world.....
Makes sense in a capitalist way since they gotta pay their share holders. For profit medical has its drawbacks people. Insurance is a for profit business, so it is a flawed way to go about health care these days.

This was over eight years ago. Prices have climbed even more. Out of control health care prices DO exist. Stop with the blinders people . They system is broken , it needs reform. Maybe not for you, but look around and do not scorn others you self serving pathetic troglodytes.
Not everyone IS a lazy bum or illegal like you folks make things out to be. Bad things DO happen to good people all the time.

Too many people listening to talk radio jocks here. I can tell. Remember folks, the talk radio buffoons are getting paid to entertain. Their word is not law and they only serve themselves. We have to stop lionising them.
See how patriotic they'd be if you paid them a simple "Living wage". But I digress................
And of course ALL our woes are due to the "illegles" ..........

Bootstrap conservatives and Lazy Socialists ( Not you CH ) should try to meet in the middle.
Poverty can be overcome by some, but not all. A few lazy folks pollute a LOT of boostrap Conservative world views. Yes, idiots abuse the systems, they always will and alway do. Look no further than the Federal government for confirmation of how to ruin a once great series of systems. But I digress......

Anyway, nice lively banter here these days.
