After damaging a modified watercraft on "premium" from a cut rate station, I stayed with Amaco Ultimate (BP's gas) for years, as the Ultimate was "crystal" clear, and it was very easy to be sure you actually had premium and not switched regular, as all gasolines have a colored dye in it to prove that the tax is paid and also to differentate grades. Most people couldn't tell the difference, but on modified equipment, the difference is important.
Hoverver, this summer the Ultimate at my local station was yellow in color, so I called corporate, and they told me it depended on what area of the country it was and where the gas came from as to if it was clear or not. Sounds like a person really cannot know what he is getting actually. I still stay with the majors though. Shell mostly, since the local station lets me pay after pumping, BP will not.

Some places here in SoCal are like that--cost less if you pay cash or if you use your ATM card, there is like a 35 cent 'fee' to use it. Off-brand places will list the cash and credit prices.

I go to Costco which is a membership store (like Sam's Club, but better). Gas prices are competitive and it is ATM card only. What I found odd is that even between Costco's the gas prices varied depending on the neighborhood--a 20-25 cent difference between the 'nicer area' store (Irvine) to one in another part of the county (Fullerton).

So for now with prices around +/- $2, am using their 91 and do feel the difference from the 87!

Gasoline-Top Tier

Guys,

In my area I try to buy the gasoline that is "Top Tier", that gas is recommended by GM, BMW and others because of it's cleaning abilities.
I'm sure that others are as good but why don't they subject themselves to the same testing?

In my neighborhood it is Shell or Chevron. I was reading Chevron's advertisement while fueling there........it seems GM uses their gasoline during emissions testing for the EPA; amazing as there are no Chevron dealers near and they must truck it in.

I will use other gasolines occasionally, but by using Top Tier stuff, I don't have to worry about dumping in some fuel clean later or having the dealer do a fuel system cleaning.

We have had some of the best prices in town at my local Shell dealers which make my job easier.

Read all of the links including the retailers who now qualify..the list grew some since I last visited.
