I didn't take it as him making fun of a degree, or even demeaning its importance. I think he was just trying to make a point that people who do this other work, that doesn't always require degrees, is no less important or difficult than education-induced careers.

Wow, just read some of this thread and there are some really differing opinions. That is a good thing. All these workers are neccesary, weather they have a BsC or Masters Degree or a factory line worker or the guy pumping your gas. When a lawyer needs his car fixed, he takes it to a mechanic. When that mechanic needs legal help, he goes to a lawyer. All jobs are needed and the price you pay goes into the economy. If you make $15,000/yr and get a raise to $20,000/yr., you spend more. That is not a bad thing. You are also paying more taxes, which goes toward social programs and other gov't spending. There are some things I cannot do and have to rely on those that can. In return I do things that others cannot. Just my 2 cents.
