Yep, the biggest hurdle with these hybrid vehicles is energy storage. Battery technology needs to improve quite a bit more before they become the eco-friendly route. Until then, the best choices are those that fit the following criteria:

Big enough for your needs.

Thrifty enough for your wallet.

How do you think I bought my HHR? Great fuel mileage, comfortable, and enough room for my wife, my dog, myself, and our stuff.

And getting 7.6L/100km (around 31mpg) in combined driving!
