I'm retired; age 65. Lost my job (info systems) in '06 for telling a boss's "pet" to fock-off. Never able to find a decent-paying replacement. But, I'm happy and getting by. Medicare was a blessing, for sure. No more deadlines; psycho-bosses or tolerating idiots! I keep busy by tinkering on my vehicles, working in my yard and detailing vehicles on the side.

I retired at the beginning of Feb. this year at 66. The last 11 years I worked in a hobby shop. I still work there part time, 2 days a week. Monday and Tuesday. I like that work week. I have a varried background. It always seemed everytime I got a good job an economic downturn would cause me to get laid off. And around here most places would not hire you because you might get called back. But I survived. And we are doing OK. We hav 2 HHRs and my house is almost paid off.

Yes, and no. I left my job at age 56, (working as a zoning and subdivision government official) in August of 2000 after 25 years there (1973-2000). Just got tired of going to an office everyday and getting hammered from the public (nobody likes zoning) and sniped at by management (they wanted me to deny permits but I wouldn't if they were legal). Kinda stressful. After I quit, I immediately began a land development consulting business cause I had extensive name recognition. So now am doing the same thing on the other side of the counter. Was very successful with it til 2008, now just climbing out of the financial hole. also left cause wifey and I loved to RV and wanted to take extended trips. Because I can conduct my business via cell phone and email, I can work from anywhere. Since I established most of the procedures still used by the Planning office, the work is fairly easy for me. So, I'm retired but I'm not. I'm immensely enjoying the freedom doing things on my own time instead of on someone elses, plus most of my bosses were idiots, I always knew a lot more than they did and a couple of them got fired cause they violated the very zoning laws they were supposed to administer. Now my twin sons are working with me, which is a real wonderful situation. We tow with a 22' travel trailer with our 1965 Chevy Van (292 engine TH350 trans). We bought the HHR to use when we're at home, although it's essentially the wife's car. HHR is so darn handy (to carry things) just like the old van. I think its listed as a 1/2 ton truck on my state registration form.

Not retired yet. Almost 50, and trying to figure out how I will retire someday is more like it for me. I worked in that huge place with you in Flint, Boydie, back in '93 and '94, but then got moved to Great Lakes. I was just a young guy with EDS back then...

The thing is, a couple of us were just trying to tell a young guy (still in his 20s) this morning about what Buick City was like, and he was not getting it. It's just SO different now.

I took a medical retirement in 2000 after getting valley fever. I was an electro/mechanical designer designing pc boards and electronic enclosures. Did this since 1967 mostly all aerospace companies. I have equipment that is out in space, in cars, planes, computers and peripheral components. Had an interesting career. I do not miss working anymore and am thankful for the health I have today. Still having fun with my HHR (best car since my '59 Vette) although I do enjoy getting the 'boat' ('56 Continental Mark II) out for a cruise night!

Budster; I always loved the styling of the Mark II, very few cars look better. Give us a photo of it.

BlueSS; At one time 25,000+ people worked there and at one time Buick built 80% of the car in house. Yes, change is inevitable but not always good for the people.

Someone said to me (ca.1980s) that America was in a new industrial revolution. I think it is true but 2-3 generations will pay the price.

Retirement is Great

I retired in 2001 at age 58 after 35 years with Blue Cross of Wisconsin. I retired on 08/31/01. Had to fly to Alberta, Canada on 09/21--only 10 days after 09/11--for my son's wedding. Was afraid I might never get home if there were any more airplane incidents. Things have been a lot less hectic since then.
