My mother has a turtle of some type that has made itself at home. One day she found it in the back yard and it has become a houseguest. I sh*t you not it has even learned to use the dog door. I did not belive till I seen it. Yes it has been there for years and it also digs a hole and will be "gone for months" and then come home. Her dogs dont bother it, and have even been seen sleeping next to the turtle.

Mr. B had a desert tortoise for about 4 years in our back yard. This tortoise would come from his home under the shed to our back door when called for his food, either that or it was habit.
I let Mr. B think he had 'trained' this animal to come when called! He was just plain hungry, not trained!

The tortoise would also go inside a plastic rectangles rubbish can we had which sat so he could go into it as a cave. One day he went in it to get out of the rain. Some how this can got up righted and we didnt know it, we found him drowned in the can as it filled with rain water deeper than he could tread water. I felt so horrible, Mr. B's trained tortoise had expired.
