Living With Mountain Lions

aka Cougars, California panthers. So I will admit that I voted for the California Cougar hunting ban, but the encounters are getting to be a bit of a nuisance in our area. I was down by our creek the other morning setting a fence post, and our little terriers rousted a big male who jumped up the bank about 20 feet from me (you know that bad adrenalin rush that makes you kind of sick, had one of those) I grabbed both the dogs since they were determined to chase him, tossed them in the truck, and now the Cougar is up in a tree right by our front door. Geez. He might be the same one that has eaten every goat within 5 miles of here. Including (witnessed) jumping a 8 foot fence while holding onto a goat). Also see one about once in every five times we go hiking in the hills. Also have a couple of coyotes I have chased off in the morning with my 30/30 (one of our dogs has been sewed up 4 times from coyote encounters) (yes, neighbors, it is 6:00am, time to wake up!). Anyway, living with carnivores, just had to share.

Oh I believe him. With civilization encroaching on so much of their habitats, they have no place to go sometimes and the food supply can be small. So killing the small animals so readily around (cats, dogs, goats, etc.) is pretty common in CA. I know here in the OC someone got killed by an ML or Cougar, can't remember and someone else was badly mauled by one as well.

Be careful!

@ngelita...who used to live on a ranch in south OC (Irvine) and would wake up to find half-eaten cats in the yard or our chickens were gone...

I live in the middle of St. Louis County and was quite surprised to see a coyote staring at me in the middle of my back yard a few months ago.

WTF You obviously aren't a local, this is not an unusual story. Sorry you are so sheltered.

If your ride didn't look as nice as it does that would be a quick trip to my ignore list for calling me a liar. Not to imply you would care of course.

That's a really pretty yard you have, nice and green! That's something you don't see here in SoCal very much,
