And, they are mostly right. I had one for a weekend in January in Detroit. Battery range at 15*F WAS low. 18 miles, I think. But, it ran OK on good old petrol afterwards. I got a combined 55MPG for the weekend. To me, that is good, but probably not good enough for my long (47 mile) commute.

Same goes for the manufacturing of GAS though too so who knows how much is one vs the other. Refineries do not produce the best smells in the world if you know what I mean. Then there is the delivering of oil via boats that are helping to pollute the oceans. Then there is all the diesel fuel that has to be produced as well that is getting used up by all the gas being delivered to the pumps. Diesel burns cleaner then gas so atleast that side of it is a wash. I am sure there is more too.

This just makes me wonder even more which is the best route.

Something else to add to your side of the discussion is that with the higher use of electricity for going to electric cars will put much more strain on the power plants we currently have. Those that live in New York and Cali know very well about rolling blackouts. Not too mention but our Power people SRP CLAIMS that the higher demand in the summer months COSTS them more to produce. While I am sure it does cost more to make MORE I would think that cost would be negated by the PAYING for that extra electricity that WE the consumer pay for it when we use it. SRP makes it sound like it is an exponential rise in production cost. So this would suggest that we would be paying higher electric rates as the usage went up.

I live 7 miles from downtown St. Louis. Depending on the wind we get Anheuser Bush, hops. Woodriver Refinery, Cero Copper, or lots of dust from farming. Go by a paper mill sometime if you want a whiff of something that gets your attention. Even folks there will tell you it smells like money. Those plants provide jobs!

IMHO, the price of electricity to supply an electric car is not much of an argument. Electricity is easily produced...after all....we use domestic coal for the most part!

Even though the Volt is a dismal failure, GM still spends millions on advertising it. that is not a business decision because it makes no sense!

Now Obama wants to increase the subsidy to $10,000 and available at the time of purchase instead of waiting on a 'rebate check'. Of course Obama has no business sense either!
