The Chevrolet Cobalt Marketing Team is excited to announce a significant fuel economy improvement on the 2008 Cobalt. Effective March 17, 2008 , any LS or 1LT Cobalt Coupe or Sedan model ordered with manual transmissions will get 36 miles per gallon on the highway. This three mile per gallon improvement now gives Cobalt the best in class manual transmission highway fuel economy.

To make these Cobalt models stand out a new badge has been added to the right side of the trunk lid labeled "XFE" (Xtra Fuel Economy).

According to the DIC in about 200 miles I'm avg 35.3 mpg keeping my speed in between 60-65. My commute is 98% highway and this is the avg on 2 days.

The XFE badge is kind of cheesy though, IMHO.

This would be the 2.2 liter engine, yes? There has to be a way that HHR 2.2's both 2007 and 2008 can benefit from some type of retro-fit or something. Would be great if that were an option.

Reminds me of the old Metro XFI. A stripped down Geo Metro, as if the car wasn't the cradle of luxury already, that achieved 58 MPG on the highway and cost only $6,500 new 20 years ago.

Ok, so how does a manual transmission increase highway mileage? Did they add an overdrive gear? Normally, a manual transmission will give more power and better gas mileage in city driving but has little effect on highway mileage.
