Towing 2 Motorcycles with the HHR

I am going on vacation to Prince Edward Island tomorrow. We are going to tow 2 motorcycles to Maine, drop off the dogs at my aunts, leave the beloved HHR behind and drive the motorcycles the rest of the way. Here's some photos i took tonight (they are a little dark) of the bikes behind the HHR.

Well, we're back. I have to dissapoint you and tell you that i did not get any more pictures in the daylight of the HHR all loaded up. The HHR however towed AWESOME! The bikes weigh 800 lbs together and the trailer weighs 450 lbs but we took off the sides and the front and back rails, which were quite heavy (200 lbs at max). So we were at 1,000 lbs or more traveling 350 miles each way to our destination. We averaged about 25 mpg. Drove 270 miles on only 1/2 tank of gas on the way home. I am quite impressed with this machines capabilities. I was very nervous at first that it would put too much strain on the car but Belladonna had no issues taking off, stoping, going up hill. it was almost like there was nothing behind us. I have a few photos of our journey that i would like to share, we didn't take many pictures. I don't like to watch my vacation go by through a camera lens. I have to get them uploaded and when i do, (have to tend to the dogs) i'll tell you all about our 1,000 mile motorcycle journey through New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island and Nova Scotia.

Our Adventure

We started our "Adventure" in Orland, Maine on Saturday August 12th. That day, we drove from Vermont to Maine (normally 6 hours) in 8 hours. Not to bad considering we towed the motorcycles and we were also traveling with our 2 dogs, one of which was 13 weeks. So we had to stop alot.

We left Maine on the bikes Sunday morning. Destination, Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island. It was one of the coldest days of the summer, about 65 degrees and very windy. We drove through Calais, ME, on to Saint John, NB and then on to Charlottetown, PEI. We made it to the Confederation Bridge at about 10 00 p.m. (approximately 11 hours after we left). The confederation Bridge is an 8 mile long brige that connects New Brunswick and PEI. It is truly amazing. The view is incredible.

This is the bridge from the PEI side, it was too dark to take pictures from the New Brunswick side.

We got stuck in horrible rain as soon as we got on the island, which i have never driven in before. That was a challenge. We stayed in PEI until wednesday morning. That day we drove from PEI to Halifax, Nova Scotia. We went to Peggys Cove before heading into downtown Halifax.

We were hoping to stay downtown Halifax but since we were on an adventure, we didn't make any reservations. We ended up outside of downtown and were too tired by the time we made it to our hotel to go back into town. We were going to travel to Lockeport, NS and then Yarmouth, NS but we didn't make reservations on the Cat to Bar Harbor and they were booked solid. We ended up Getting tickets for the ferry from Digby, NS to St. John NB on Friday. We headed out of Halifax early thursday morning and drove to Digby. We found an alternate route along the coast so we could spend some time off the highway. The scenery was beautiful. We got to digby around 3 p.m so we were able to explore a little before we cought the boat the next afternoon.

Trash cans like these are all you can find. They separate everything. Couldn't resist the photo op.

The next day we got on the ferry to New Brunswick and drove back to maine. We saw the most georgeous sunset as we were driving through the mountains.

We stayed in maine saturday so we could spend our birthday (we have the same birthdate) with our families. (we both have family in maine). Then we drove back to Vermont on Sunday. That's our adventure in a little more than a nutshell.
