I've been using wireless networking since 1993 - before they settled on a standard ;-)

Wireless is much more secure than it was in the early days when you only had a choice of "WEP" or nothing.
Nowadays, most equipment supports WPAv2 which if you use with a properly long and hard to guess passphrase, is as about as secure as it gets.

Choosing not to broadcast the SSID is really only a minor security enhancement, someone with a wireless sniffer can easily see what SSID you are using, so never simply rely on that alone.

A properly secured wireless network should be as secure as a wired network for all intents and purposes of most users. An unsecured computer (no firewall) is fair game no matter how you are connected to the internet - wired via DSL, dialup or wireless.

I've been testing 11n (300mbit) at work (Cisco) for 1 1/2 years or so now, quite a change from the original 1mbit stuff I worked in 1993 ;-)

Wireless is a must-have if you have any PDAs that can use it - or an iPod touch for example...
