Ten wagons to fulfill any consumer want or need
Posted Jul 29th 2006 5:05PM by Joel Arellano
There was a time the very mention of the word "station wagon" pegged you as married with lots of children; a hippy; a square; and other less than savory adjectives. The wagon's oh-so-practical shape definitely countered any hint of excitement.
But escalating gas prices and, more importantly, good design sense, are prompting Americans away from their sports cars, sedans, and SUVs. Business Week lists ten station wagons, each one fulfilling a particular segment or abstract niche like domestic/import. Take a gander at these "five-doors" and let us know if the editors are hip or still square.
Fastest Domestic: Dodge Magnum SRT8
Fastest Import: Mercedes-Benz E55 AMG Wagon
Most Fuel-Efficient: Pontiac Vibe/Toyota Matrix
Best Cargo Room: Volvo V70
Most Expensive: Mercedes-Benz E55 AMG Wagon
Best Resale Value (Luxury): BMW 3 Series 325xi
Lowest Total Cost of Ownership: Chevrolet HHR
Best Off-Road: Subaru Outback
Safest: Saab 9-3 SportCombi
Best Overall: Subaru Legacy

This is what it said about the HHR:
The HHR certainly doesn't look like wagons of yore. And in another stereotype-dispelling move, the HHR is one of the least expensive wagons to own on the market. In fact, its cost-per-mile-driven during ownership is nearly as good as the best Toyota's Scion brand can offer. A great deal of the HHR's TCO proficiency comes from exceptionally low value depreciation (after the first year), due no doubt to its bold looks. According to Edmunds.com, the HHR depreciates slower than Chrysler's PT Cruiser or Mazda's 3 and is less expensive to operate than a Scion xB.

The variety of American-made wagons was seriously compromised in the mid-1980s and early 1990s as minivans and later SUVs began cutting into market share. But now even domestic manufacturers have returned to the form with gusto. DaimlerChrysler's (DCX) high-performance, muscle-influenced Dodge Magnum and General Motors' (GM) one-of-a-kind Chevrolet HHR are head-turning re-entries into the U.S. wagon space.
