"everyone I talk to just sloughs me off as a nut"
Trust me nacademus, that wasn't my intention at all and I hope you'll accept my apology if it came across that way. I'm just concerned that people are going to start hitting the "Panic" button without having all the facts, and then having to deal with repercussions from decisions made out of fear rather than reason.

I never said to panic. No once. All I said was to be aware of it, and made a small form of countermeasure known. That's all. Everyone is speculating. There are 6 reactors that may meltdown fully. This has never happened before.
A Nuclear Powerplant releasing energy is a lot less efficient than a weapon, therefore radiation is less predictable and may contaminate further and with more intensity. Nobody knows what will happen. Just understand that the earth isn't as big as you think it is.

I didn't say you were the one saying "panic", trust me. Your concern is not misplaced at all, I'm just concerned that in general there is going to be an atmosphere of panic setting in. The last thing we need as a society, and as a planet drawn together in concern and sorrow over this unprecedented disaster, is for panic to set in.
If a panic starts over this situation in Japan, I'm afraid that the casualties that have already occurred will pale in comparison to what may happen as people flee in the face of a general panic.

Prevailing winds in the atmosphere (not at ground level) do cross to Alaska and sweep down the coast.
Here's a rather crude map, but it does show it.

Here's a blog with all sorts of links and quotes about the topic....
