I use elm327 and dashcmd app on my iphone and its a great combo, gives you gauges,code reading and clearing and it also logs. The setup is a little indepth to get the most accurate data but its really cool!
Ive used it on multiple cars and havent had many problems with it in general.

User Report: Favorable! I've used the BAFX (clone) for almost a month now, and have even loaned it out to a coupla friends (to check codes) with Torque Pro on their phones; still working fine for all. I've used it almost daily on two of my vehicles, the HHR and 2500HD, and will try it on the Cobalt tomorrow. I might just buy one for each vehicle, and leave them in place, and use the plug-in that automatically starts the app. Normally, I disapprove of non-domestic items (I was aware of where the HHR is/was built), but what can you do...at least it works!

I have had or used a bunch at our shop. We started with the old Snap on "Brick" MT2500. We also have the Snap On modis. $11k plus $950 twice a year in updates, We have OTC Pegasus and Geneses. Thousands of buck, but crap. What I like best is by a company called Launch. The Creader 6 you can pick up for about $70 on Ebay and is a great quick generic scanner. For about $250 you can get CRP129 (or Creader 8) I love this scanner! I leave behind about $25k worth of stuff and go for this one on every diagnostic. Eveny comes with free updates

UH, LESS THAN $200 was the Q. And that was a long time ago. The Snap On tools are rebranded TechII scanners. You left out the $50,000/year for TISweb (I think that's what they call the firmware repository) access.
I just don't know how to beat the $15 for an ELM327 adapter and FREE software for your laptop that reads every PID that is not disabled by GM and clears all codes. It would be nice to be able to access the ABS and body controls and use the console the software provides, but GM blocks.
Kind of curious, the names of jczboy's recommended units have close to dirty pronunciations. CR_P..., C____Blocker, WKRP in Cincinnati.
