They just need to be polished with a rubbing /polishing compound depending on how deteriorated they are.
Sometimes even wet sanded from 800>1000>1200>1500>2000>orange compound>white compound>glaze>polishing compound
Flitz is the best final polish I've found, but Mothers Mag and Aluminum Polish, while not as good is less expensive.
If you don't want to final re polish every 6 months, then spray a 2 part clear urethane coat when polished

Depending on how aged and yellowed the lens are , the sand and polish then clear is good, next time, I’m just gonna replace the headlights, I’ve sanded and polished 2X the last time I clear coated, the salt and sand and road crude still destroyed the lens.

After polishing the headlights, you can also use a transparent film. Usually silicone 3M is used, this is also used on new headlights as armor

PS: After polishing the headlights, the result is not durable because sanding destroys the outer hard layer applied by the manufacturer and exposes the soft body of the headlamp lens

I like to buy my used HHRs from down south because they have little or no rust. However, because of the sunny weather the headlights are usually much more clouded and yellowed than up north.

I tried polishing them, but they faded again quickly. The factory has an anti-UV coating on the lens but eventually it breaks down anyways. Once you polish you remove the coating.

There are spray-on coatings that will prolong your cleaning job.

However, for about $60 shipped from Rock Auto, now I just buy new headlights (usually TYC brand). They also come with new bulbs installed in the headlights.

Clearly they are not quite as high-quality as the OEM headlights but they do the job and won't fade for many years. The only down side is you have to remove the bumper to replace the headlight assemblies.

I got these results by using sand paper and non yellowing clear coat.

Cost was about 12USD

Looking good! An Internet auto parts site has TCY headlights for both under $100.00 USD .

Headlight cleaner

If you live in the USA, you know Publishers Clearing House...they started with magazines, not they sell everything. Hoping their notice that I am in the running for $5,000 a week for life, I thought my chances would be better if I bought something...LOL I bought a Headlight Restoration Cloth...warns to put on gloves before opening!! Made in China and contains Water, Bentonite, Polyoxyethylene lauryl ether, Sodium dodecyl sulfate, Silicone oil, ETC Whatever the etc is must work as my 06 lens look brand new after 15 years of mfg. take the gray cloth and buff lens, use firm finger on areas of haze...do this for 3-5 minutes. Wipe off any excess with clean white microfiber and buff for a polish cleaning. I didn't get a visit from the Prize Patrol, but I got some shining headlights!! Must have thrown away the order once product arrived, as I con't give you a product number. Inquire at PCH.com and buy it. Not cheap, but like my Canadian mirical green grass seed and shipping 2 pounds, worked out to 15 dollars a pound..like Headlight cleaner, grew grass in Virginia which is really green. My yard is a mess, so I'll try anything. Good luck.
