cooling fan
i have an 2008 HHR LT it overheated so we did a thermostat check it was stuck so we replaced it,, now when the temp gets up to 200 205 the fan quit working so now where do we go,, the relay switch... maybe .. anybody got any suggestions? why would the fan work when it was cool but turns off when it gets hot.

The t-stat usually fails OPEN. The job of the t-stat is to keep the coolant hot enough. When it is cold it is locked closed.
Over heating is rarely caused by a bad t-stat.
I don't know what could cause the fan to work that way.

Donbrew. I thought on the 2.2's and 2.4's that the fan didn't come on until something like 217-219 degrees. Is that correct ?
If so, then it may be operating within specs of not coming on at 200-205.
To the OP: The fan should come on any time the AC compressor is engaged regardless of engine temp. You should try AC or defrost mode and see if the fan comes on then.

My fan doesn't kick in until 217 on my 2.4. The temp goes up to 219 for a quick second then quickly drops back down to at or near 190 if sitting still. Danger zone is around 230's so I would think it would be safe to let the car idle until 217 is reached then see if the fan kicks on. If the car gets up to the 200's during normal driving I would say there is a problem. As long as I am moving at 40 or above my car goes down to at least 187 sometimes 185.

we checked the bottom hose ..running,,,about 200f temp and it wasnt hot. so the stat was stuck closed ,right? thats what the haines manual said to do

T-stat opens at 180F, fan comes on at 219F, fan goes off at 180F; unless the A/C compressor is on. The t-stat closes again if the temp goes below 180F.
The fan is always on if the A/C compressor is running, the compressor runs if the A/C button is lit, or the defrost mode is on or the recirc button has been pushed.
I have no idea why the fan would be on then turn off at 205F as described.

To test the t-stat you first make sure it is closed at room temp then drop it into near boiling water; observe that it opens, then closes as it cools to below 180F.
Causes of your scenario also include air pocket, clogged radiator, clogged heater core, broken water pump.
