Do you change oil according to the oil life monitor?

I too had a 72 Vega GT wagon (my first new car) Chevy replaced the engine for me when oil comsuption got to 1 qt/350 miles. I had the car for 3 1/2 years then traded it for a 76 Nova Concourse four door w 350 CI 4bbl which got better gas mileage than the Vega.
The HHR I keep an eye on the DIC. My last oil change was at 11000 miles and the DIC was at 20%. I did a lot of highway driving. I'm at 64% after 5000 miles. M1 full synthetic is used.

Small world huh.. I got my 72 Vega wagon very used.. So Chevy wasn't gonna do anything for me.
That's pretty heavy oil consumption.. But that's what happened..

I have always changed mine between 3,000 and 3,500 miles.I Dont rely on the DIC. Even at 3,000 miles the oil is pretty dirty. I am old skool I guess, change it every 3 months or 3,000 miles which ever comes first was what I was taught in my Auto Mechanics class in high school. It all boils down to how and what kind of driveing you do and for the most part, a matter of opinion.

Do you really need to change the oil every three months regardless of mileage? Just curious as I don't put many miles on my vehicle over the course of a year and go well past three months before I need a change. ??

As I understand it...Organic oil has a life expectency...synthetic does not, or if so, it is a very long time.

I tend to buck everybodies advice, and have never had a problem with my vehicles. I drive 50K a year. when the DIC says it's time (15K) I will change the filter, the next time I change the oil & filter usually M1, but always full synthetic whatever is on sale. I always get at least 300K with no engine probs before trade in time.
Remember back when Synthetic oil was introduced, they claimed you never had to change your oil again? But, wait, you still need to sell product!!
I still believe the old "change your oil every 5K and everything will be good" line is HOOEY. I do monitor and sing and talk and whisper sweet things to the vehicles I drive, but oil changes are not the huge thing Jiffy Lube (your favorite oil change company here) makes them out to be! Just my personal experience.

Have always changed oil on past vehicles between 2500 and 3000 mi. (I'm old school)
On my HHR I change it when the DIC is at 60%. This equals to around 4000 plus miles on mine. Will stick with that, seeing it is an easy, quick and cheap maintance service for me to do.

After changing the engine oil, the system must be reset as follows:
1. Turn the ignition to RUN, with the engine off.
2. Press the information and reset buttons on the DIC at the same time to enter the personalization menu.
3. Press the information button to scroll through the available personalization menu modes until the DIC display shows OIL-LIFE RESET.
4. Press and hold the reset button until the DIC display shows ACKNOWLEDGED. This will tell you the system has been reset.
5. Turn the key to LOCK.
