Dumb question about oil filter

Ok. A simple question. When replacing the oil filter do you folks :
(1) Put new oil filter in, then replace cap, or
(2) Put new oil filter in cap and replace togeather ?

Reason for the question is because we're dealing with 2 seperate O-rings: big one on cap, small one on filter. Do you think it matters which way you replace the filter? Just curious.

I put the filter in then replace the cap , seems like the best way to do it.

I would think inserting the filter into the cap first, would be the smart way. It would assure proper alignment of everything (also was told this is correct by GM Engineering).

I SUSPECT some of the semi crushed filter that owners have experienced, may have come from installing the filter....then screwing on the cap. Just a suspicion, however.

Ditto...... I suspect snoopy is right on the crushed filters. If the filter is placed into the engine first and the fitted ring/cup in the cap doesn't line up right it will smash the filter some before it "pops" into place in the cap. Especially if you have the car up on ramps or stands as the filter will lean back some and not be centered when you go to put the cap on.

Agreed, & I would only add, imo helps on the o-rings to wipe em with oil before install, so they don't chafe, & are lubed to slide in easily..

The filter is designed to snap onto the cap before installation.
