front end noise

Hey Guys I got front end noise that sounds like something is warped, I've got new brakes and rotated tires twice in a week, so I know its not the tires, it drives fine just got that whop, whop whop, going down the road,(it has gotten louder over the past week) I've jacked it up twice and removed the tires no transmission leaks, but the right axle seems to have a lot more play than the drivers side, although the boots are good no sign of them cut or damaged I'm thinking its that axle with that play up and down no play in the drivers side, you can turn the wheel to the right going down the road and it gets louder, turn to left and it will quit-en down, any comments, any post on changing that axle

Yes, replacing the driveshaft/axle has been discussed. Give the search tool at the top of the page a try.

The axles have a slip joint on the inner end, 3 inches of play.

I would be thinking hub/bearings or brake pad Wear indicators. Did you check the pads while you had the wheels off?

If you change the axle you have to R&R the hub anyway, just put a new one on at 120K to save future labor. It's a 1 hour job, disregard any mentions of spline guards. The passenger side has an extension that needs to be removed and transferred to the new axle, you'll need a bearing breaker of some sort for that (an exhaust clamp may work).

donbrew, I'm not sure what you are talking about on the extension that needs to be transferred to the new one but the part will be in tomorrow and I will compare, and go from there

After you you pull the axle, you will see it. They saved a bit of money by making the shafts interchangeable, but the passenger side needs to be about 3" longer. At least I think it's the pass side.

The noise your explaining that changes with Turing from left to right going down the road to me sounds like a wheel bearing (hub) noise.

Wheel bearing

you are right lucky, I pulled the drive shaft inspected and found no problem with it, reinstalled the drive shaft and inspected the wheel bearings, I couldn't find any slack, but the noise was on the left side, changed the wheel bearing on the left side and it cured the noise so I went ahead and changed the right side as well, total time to change both side was just over an hour, want to say thanks for the input from the forum!
