Maintenance Parts Suggestion

My dad taught me, if you need thicker oil, then you need to rebuild then engine, bearings, rings , gaskets and seals.

I trust my buddy with engine stuff and he trusts me with the audio stuff. I also looked it up and it said its better for high mileage cars and hotter weather. Going on 4 oil changes with 10-40.

When I do timing chains I replaced the front cover gasket but not the valve cover gasket, on the theory that if the old front cover gasket decided to leak, it would be a much bigger PITA to change. Neither leaked.
I did use 5-40 in Summers in my 2008 2.2L. Haven’t done that with the 2011, instead dutifully obey the mandate for Dexos, which seems to only come in 5-30. But it’s over 80K miles now, so that philosophy could change. With thicker oil I worry about pressure being delayed to the chain tensioners and oil squirter.

Did what "they" say, include todays technological improvements and the tolerances kept during manufacturing of modern engines.
Or did "they".
Also, anything can be stated in the internet. For instance,.
I've been working on cars since 1972.
Back in the day of my first truck ('57 Chevy stepside, 283ci) I ran straight 40 weight.
And if I didn't, well, lets say that we didn't have an issue with mosqitos.
After I rebuilt the engine it ran with 10w40.
Since my first new vehicle, I do only as recommended by the manufacturer.
That's what I paid them for.

You trust your buddy more than the guys that designed the engine?
[sarcasm] Eat the rich! Find more tin foil! The Man is trying to kill us all! Everything is designed to fail! Don't ever do what the Man wants! They are just trying to make money selling thin oil! My buddy has done more research and has more experience than all of those engineers put together! They don't have laboratory facilities where they test things like my buddy does!

All ribbing aside, and most importantly, is your buddy gonna step up and pay to replace your engine when it fails?
It’s your HHR, it’s your choice to trust whoever you choose to.
