Question Oil usage

Hi guys, I have a 2006 HHR 2.4 with 345,000 miles and since day one of owning the car I've only use full synthetic oil swearing by my last 2 cars this is the way to go rather conventional or semi syn. Now having a car with this many miles it's using oil(not leaking) and around 2500 miles I have to add a quart or two. Is there a product on the market that can slow down the oil consumption that someone has tried and actually worked? I've tried a couple products that was supposed to work but didn't come close to working. Any suggestions? I love my HHR and want to keep it as long as possible

That really isn't terrible consumption. Well within GM's "acceptable" limits, IIRC 1 quart per 1,000 miles. And that's for a low mileage vehicle. Not "acceptable" to us of course.

I suppose you've tried the "high mileage" oil, for vehicles over 75,000 miles. Yeah, you passed that long ago!

345,000 miles, keep doing what you're doing, seems to be working pretty good.

I have found that Mobil1 seems to burn more than others. You might try other brands.

"High mileage" oils have seal glop in them.

There are no miracles in a bottle.

I wouldn't use any thickeners in a 2.4L it has VVT valves that depend on 5W30 to operate properly.

Check the hose that goes from the valve cover to the rubber elbow at the throttle body, it might be sucking oil there to the TB

Yup still using Valvolene 5W30 full synthetic high mileage and never used Mobil

If there were oil in that hose, it would signify worn piston rings, which I'm sure is the case, with high miles like you have. The rings wear, increasing crankcase pressure, which forces oil vapors out through the PCV system, and into the incoming air stream. With badly worn rings, oil also then can get from the crankcase, past the rings, into the combustion chamber and burn off.

The formulation of the high mileage oil or other additives is to soften seals and reduce or prevent oil leaks. If you have no leaks, your problem is most likely rings and/or valve guides. A compression and leak down test may tell which one, or both.

You can keep it out of the intake air stream, but that's just treating the symptom. The crankcase is still going to lose oil if the rings are worn.
