Passenger side wiper too long?

Hello all HHR folks...new to the forum. Just purchased my first HHR yesterday. It is a 2007 LT.

The first thing I needed to do was replace the wipers. So I checked and then purchased 2 18" wipers for driver and passenger side.

After installing, the passenger side wiper is resting with about 1" of the tip of the blade on the windshield moulding and area beneath the hood. This does not seem correct, as it is definitely not resting on the windshield as it should be. It is obviously bound up and incorrectly going over top of the moulding.

Any tips or ideas for this issue? Should I go ahead and install a 16" wiper instead?

Thanks for any help you can give me... JD

The car calls for two 18 inch wipers. I noticed the same thing when I installed them, so I went with 17 inch Anco Contours. They fit perfectly.

I would guess....the whole arm assembly needs to be loosened, removed and repositioned.

If you look very carefully (and you have the OEM window OR a GOOD replacement) there is 2 little "bulls eyes" where the top tip of the blade should rest when the wiper is not in motion. Reposition the wipers so the tip rests on the bulls eye and I bet you don't have the problem.

Oh, and the Service Manual does state 18 inch blades.

Right, I meant a 17" blade...

I'm not understanding your logic on this one

I will try to reposition the arm. Any tips on doing this? My first day with an HHR...but I will take a look and figure it out.

Thanks!

The wiper arm NUT has a plastic cover. Pry this off GENTLY and that will provide access to the NUT.....can't remember the size. Remove the NUT, but BEFORE pulling and removing the arm, note the location of the blade and move the arm accordingly. Just reinstall in reverse.

NOTE:....the arm has a "grooved" area under the thread for the NUT. The shaft the arm fits on is splined with threads on the top for the nut. Make sure everything matches when reinstalling.

Make sense???

Check for the alignment that I mentioned in the previous post, to assure this is your problem.

For very small adjustments, you can SLIGHTLY bend the arm where it is already bent. And those bullseyes are very hard to see. Contrary to any design sensibility GM decided that the wipers should NOT align with any parallelarity (not a word), they do not even try to look good. I made my own problem when I decided that the driver side should at least be horizontal, then I found the bullseyes.

sorry to hijack the thread, but are there refills available for the OEM wipers that come on the HHR?
i kinda like the "beefy" looking wiper blades.

Not that I've heard of or seen. However, GM will be happy to sell you new wipers for like $23 each, or go to the local WallyWorld etc. get the same "BEAM" type for around $11 each. What you need to look for is "BEAM" type wipers, not "bracket" type. Seems to be the only refills are "make your own". Any how beam type are the newer type that most of us have never seen before, but are now the standard suddenly.
