Question on Synthetic Oil Brands
#21
Royal Purple is good but not any better than most others out there. Most oils are made to set standards. A 12 inch ruler is 12 inches no matter who makes it. Read the make up and ratings on oils and if they meet the stadards listed there is little difference between most.
One thing we all need to consider from here forward too is that carbon build up on intake valves is now getting to be an issue on Direct Injection cars. In the past only exhaust valves were much of an issue but today with the fuel not passing over the intake valve carbon build up can come into play. GM has tried to leave the valve open a little to help with fuel cleaners but some engine have has carbon build up.
Oil seeps down the valves and guides to keep them lubes. With out fuel and cleaners the oil can carbon up the intake and create issues with the cylinder heat.
This is an issue all DI engines have seen and VW/Audi have been hit the worse.
The use of syn oils will help as well as GM top cleaner for oil. Many other makes are using it or the Chevron equal.
GM recomends top tier fuels but they are limited in many areas. Shell is the only one here in Ohio that has been listed and most of them have been replaced with Sunoco here.

Take Castrol - it s top than Mobil1. Mobil1 glory - the result of good work of specialists in advertising, not chemists.
If interested - I use KIXX. A little known but very good brand. I'm doing it for a small price. If this oil is in America, look at him.
I took such a canister for the winter, cold in our area

I have been running M1 in my 2.4 2006 HHR. I follow the DIC and change the oil when it reaches 20%. The miles maybe from 8000 to 11000 miles depending on my driving history. The car now has 103,000+ miles on the clock now and I've had no issues with the engine what so ever. I believe that just changing the oil is a good preventative method for long life.
I have an 87 Fiero GT which I bought new and have been using dino oil for all the oil changes which I do at 3000 or so intervals (145,000 miles). The car doesn't get driven that much, so usually once per year. I also have an 88 Fiero GT that had an engine swap done 10+ years ago (70,000+ miles on that engine) and I've been using synthetic oil in that one (Amsoil) again about once a year.

Made by cheveron/texaco corp,,overseas division...only sold on the 'other' side of the world..though I suspect its probably the same oil as some other name brand here..CALTEX was the mother company (Socal/Texaco)..CalTex became a part of Chevron in 2001..probably the big boom of auto buying drove them to expand..
