Just to update everyone. A partial bottle from one of those notorious kits and my air works again. After I put in a few ounces, the compressor started to run. About 3/4 bottle and it was within the safe zone (per the ambient temp chart). Now I will see if there is a leak.... Time will tell.
My total investment thus far is $21.20

Which 'kit' did you use? Likely one with a sealant (like AC Pro) if you're still good because the only way the refrigerant can become low is if it leaks for someone lets some out.

Glad to here it's still working. You my have a slow leak and be able to get by with giving it a freon boost every summer or so
