Replacing Headlight Bulbs
#33
arrrrgh photobucket keeps crashing on me, here we go again:
I pulled fasteners all the way around the arch until I could pull down the inner fender:

easy access to both bulbs and the fog light (if installed):

In Canada there are two bulbs, the Sylvania $14 "H13" (below) and the Bosch $25 "9008". Does anyone know the average longevity on each?

I'm posting 2-3 images at a time because this is taking all day:
to remove the bulb from the socket, DO NOT make this mistake:

the socket requires some effort to remove and I could not ascertain if there is some clip or lock on it, but it eventually just popped off.
be careful not to touch the new bulb or your fingerprint will fry and the bulb will burn out within minutes:

test the new bulb and check its aim against a wall:

vice grips work great on sheet metal screws! with needle nose pliers they slip off all the time and the screws end up on the floor...socket wrench is too slow, and with vice grip re-assembly is easier cuz you need to fish around a bit to align the holes, which is not easy unless you have a really tight grip on the screw.

I am not sure if it's been mentioned here, but make sure you get the old gasket out before trying to put the new bulb in. The old gasket will try to stay behind and the new bulb has one already installed. The new bulb will not seat if there are 2 gaskets!

My wife just texted me that the driver's side headlight is out. I figured it would be an easy replacement like all my other vehicles. Good thing I read up on this thread.
How GM could require this amount of work to change a stinkin' lightbulb is absolutely mind-boggling.
