going back to RP oil (5w-30, of course)

I've used Mobil 1 in my '09 HHR, and in the wife's '08 Cobalt, since day one. For the first year on each, they went to the dealer to have the oil changed, and tires rotated every 5k miles. The second year, I started changing my HHR's oil at 7000 miles (never under 40% oil life left on the DIC), first with regular Mobil 1, then later with the next step up, then after 75000 miles, with the top grade for older cars. Once I used their 15k guaranteed oil 9but chickened out at 10k, and 36% on the DIC). The wife kept up her 5k regimen at the dealer (she's only reached 40k miles). I never was a fan of Mobil oil before I got these cars (used Castrol or Valvoline, then Royal Purple for decades), but the GM mindset preferred the M1, so to preserve warranty.... Now, at 111k miles on the HHR, out of any kind of warranty, I am going back to RP. After tearing down many race engines that we ran from birth on RP, and seeing no wear or scuffing anywhere, I'll be pretty confident that 5-7.5, or even 10k miles between changes is doable. I'm also going back to Wix filters (a personal favorite).

Hey Whopper, Sorry for the delay, been busy lately,. My Ranger has a 3.0, 5 speed ext cab.
Had a fender bender the other day with the HHR, body shop having a time matching paint "sunburst orange" back the second time, maybe they will get it close enough this time.

No problem. That 3.0L probably gets better gas mileage than the 4.0. Sorry to hear of the fender bender and the probs with the paint match. Some of the new fancy colors must be a *itch to match. Good luck with it.

The manual specifies not use 10w-40 or 20w-50 but does not specifically mention 10w-30.

Will using 10w-30 oil cause any issues?
Now days you have to take what you read with a grain of salt. It's horrible it's gotten this way but business is greedy. Ford vans call for 5w-20. Are you kidding me??? Hell just fill it up with water. May as well. I don't get this one. I do get that if you use 5w-20 after so long you'll wear out that engine quicker. Then Ford will expect you come see them for another engine.

Mileage and tolerances, our 2018 GMC Terrain 1.5 litre turbo requires 0W20 weight Dexos II full synthetic oil. It runs very well gets 32 mpg.
It’s just 3 years old and we’ve only driven it 15,000 klms or 9,320 miles no signs of any problems yet. Knock on wood!

The wifes Mopar takes 5w-20, & her 2.4L has been very happy with it for about 89K to date.
