I didn't have everything I needed to do the oil change myself (including the "approval" of Mrs. B.R. 
), so when I took my HHR to the dealership to get the armrests and the A/C growl problem fixed, I brought my own oil and got them to change it.
I figured I would save a decent amount of money by having them change the oil.
Well not quite. When you pay for the dealership oil change package, they reduce the cost of the filter to $6. Bring in your own oil, and they charge full price ($12.10
). Also costs an extra $1 to dispose of the plastic oil containers.
In the fall, I'll be changing it myself.

Do like I do and have someone else do it
Hey I don't mind having someone else do it. You only save 10 bucks. Walmart will do it for about 15 bucks. You don't have to jack the car up or mess with disposing if the oil .
I recommend the newer synthetic oil. These small 4 cylinder engines are reved way high and work real hard.

Had 5 litres of Syntec 5W30 put in it today.
I wanted to use Pennzoil Platinum, but it didn't go on sale when I needed it. Now that I have Syntec in there, Pennzoil Platinum will go on sale this weekend

Yeah, you do. It's more like a rubber gasket that goes on the back side of the drain plug.

Up to you, your dealer and pricing.
My dealer just did away, with removing the gasket and replacing the gasket. Faster to just install a new plug with the inherent gasket and it probably removes the possibility of gasket tear, etc.
For me...buy a gasket for $1.00, or buy the entire plug with gasket for $1.00.
