Clear Coat peeling

The clear coat on my 09 HHR is peeling on the passenger side rear quarter. Only a spot about half the size of a dollar bill, but I am sure it will continue to get bigger. Local body shop says it will cost about $600 to paint the entire panel. They say you really can't spot the clear coat. You can spot the base coat, but not the clear. Car is a little less than two years old with less than 10,000 miles on it. What are my chances of getting this covered undr waranty? Thaks Rick

I'd talk to my dealer about it .
The Body shop guy is right about clear you have to spray the whole panel or you will be able to see it in the finish .

That's not entirely true, I've blended clear coat several times. The problem isn't that it can't be done, its that its not practical to do it. Depending on the size of the panel and the size of what needs to be blended, there is less labor involved in clear coating the entire panel. To properly spot the clear, you have to wet sand a fairly large area, then spray a small area of clear and feather it into the larger sanded area. Then wet sand the feathered area with 1200 + 1500 grit, then polish.

Yeah Doc is right, you can spot in clear coat, but its so labor intensive that nearly every body shop will say it can't be done. What would concern me is why that panel started peeling and whether it will start peeling in another location. In this case redoing the whole quarter panel is the best course of action, but I would take it to the dealer and see about a warranty claim.

I honestly don't see why the dealer wouldn't fix it on that new of a car with that low of miles. Take it in.
