I forgot to mention that the cup holders in my 2011 (unlike the 2008) actually fit my coffee mug and medium soda cups. Still no fit for large cups or large water bottles.

That may be why some don't see a problem.

Weird.. first I've heard of a problem with the cup holders. I have a 2007 and my Contigo travel mugs stay just fine, city driving, bumpy roads, whatever. Sure, they're in a dumb (but pretty much only available) spot.. but I haven't actually spilled anything.
Of course.. I don't E-brake turns much either.

Smash you bring up an interesting point. I have the hardest time with the location of the cup holders. It's even more difficult in the winter months when you're wearing a big winter coat. But I have to agree, that's pretty much the only available location, unless they went with the pop out holder in the dash route.. Maybe a cool mod for someone down the road...

Just bought my hhr ss 2008, I love it but I don't care for the cupholders either, eagerly looking for an alternative. Most cars I have owned are gm don't know why they can't do like KIA,Hyundai, or even chrysler where different size cups and bottles fit into holder. Even my Saturn was better that way, it had a removable insert so larger sizes or cups with handles would fit. I love the idea of the spring loaded Santa fe ones, if you do that please post pics. Personally I have not had luck yet trying to weld plastic so any advice you have there would be great.

In the case of the cup holders, I would have preferred a foot operated floor lever for the emergency brake like we had in the old days . Then move the cup holders to the center of the console. Without the hand operated brake lever there it would open up that space and allow for more useful cup holder design. I think that would elevate a lot of frustration with large drink containers in the HHR. I would go one further with adding perhaps a column shift for the HHR offered in automatic. Then you would have all kinds of room for storage and cup holders but course that would not have worked for the 5-speed models. Orrrrrrrrrrrrrr, could you say "5 on the tree" Like we had in the old days

I used scrap plastic from what I cut out to build the bases.
I also used Styrofoam Gap filler to get my basic shape.

Then I cut down the styrofoam in the shape I wanted.

Next I put on a layer of bondo. Sanded and repeated putting layers till it was just right.

Then a layer of 2x primer

Sand to find pin holes.

Then Spot putty.

Sand then 2x primer.

Then the 3 coats of Black Gloss.

The Leds are prewired from china. 10 for $1.00. BLUE

Thanks!!! Sorry for the last picture. My Friend took it. Blurry!!!

I did not spend a ton of time on the Phone Cradle. Just in case I get a new Android. lol... It is nice looking but not as nice as the Radio cover.
