Front seat back removal

I'd like to swap the front seat backs in my HHR, drivers side to passenger & vice versa. The mesh map bag would be great on the passenger seat back so you could reach into it from the drivers seat, without needing an arm with 3 extra joints in it like you need to access the bag as it comes from the factory.

So, how do the backs come off, & will they interchange side to side??? Thanks!!!

I do have an arm rest, but I don't want to swap the entire back. I want to swap the smaller back panel that the map storage bag is mounted to. I guess I should have called it the back of the seat back. It looks like it pops off somehow, but I don't want to break anything on a car I've owned for just 3 days.

Good point brought up, above.

Will the back of the passenger side fit with the arm rest on the outside of the drivers side.....and of course, vice versa. It's pretty tight right now. However, the arm rest could be removed with fabrication.

Additionally, the passenger side back has the "flat plate" to assist with dropping the seat back all the way and providing extra area when loading longer materials. Don't believe the drivers side will allow the seat back to recline all the way....steering wheel is probably in the way.

Seems that making some type of pocket, either with netting material (or maybe removing the existing netting and installing it on the EXISTING passenger seat would be an easier project) or leather/fabric. Just a thought.

You posted as I was writing.....I think the seat back internal structure has different mounting points for their respective backs.

I had my seats apart last summer, the seat back plastic pieces you speak of are different diamentions and do not interchange, neither will the seat backs themselves, the passenger side is shorter, to accomadate the forward fold feature

There are after-market solutions for hanging bags from the head rest posts.

I was hoping switching the plastic backs side to side would be the easy, no cost solution. But, it looks like no such luck. Thanks for the info & suggestions.
