'07 with bad 2.2. What engines will work?

We have have a '07 HHR with a bad 2.2. Its high mileage so we are thinking an engine and a auto trans update. But I am reading alot of opinions on what yr 2.2 motors will and won't work for this swap. Are the '07-08 engines different from the '06 and earlier? Are the '09-10 different from the '07-08? What yrs engine and trans will work in this HHR?
Thanks for any info.

Welcome to the site, stick with '07 engine and trans, the '07 2.2 doesn't have VVT , some '08's do, the '06 could have an external oil cooler which has its problems plus the hoses and housing to adapt it, if you can afford it then go with a new 2.2 from GMPP, or ZZP or even Summit Racing a long block is under $2,000.00 and a whole engine is under $3,500.00 , then you get a warranty, as for the automatic check out GMPP , if you go the wrecking yard route then ask to ensure then then engine your getting is compatible with your computer and wiring harness, most yards sell the engine striped of any manifolds or accessories like fuel injectors, alternator, pulleys or even the flywheel. But you save money
So, you have to ask yourself, do you feel lucky!? Well do ya??
Kidding aside, I hope your swap goes without a hitch!!

Thank you oldblue for the info. No, I'm not feeling so lucky at this point. I'm not sure the thing is worth the cost of a long block. I will hear it run for the first time this weekend so I am unsure of how bad the damage is. I teach HS automotive so I hope it is still rebuildable, but was going to start looking for a salvage yard engine just in case. I found a low mile '09 engine and trans at a very good price and thought I would go that route if it would work. It sounds like you are saying this is a one yr only engine if I have to start looking. Would the "09 work if I transfer my intake, sensors, ect? Would the '09 trans work on my '07 engine (if it is rebuildable?)?
I really appreciate the do's and don'ts.

That 09 is going to be a flex fuel engine with VVT. Your 07 is not.
Almost an impossible swap because of the electronics: ECM and stuff. Best to stick with the same year when swapping Ecotec engines.

Fwiw. The 06 is what the folks here call the "stand alone" engine. Lots of changes were done after that 1st year of production. So i wouldn't consider the 06 either if you find one.

'07 and '08 are compatible if they don't have the VVT solenoids just to the left of the #1 spark plug.

for what its worth my 06 blew just after 200k and i ended up swapping in a 2.2 Saturn motor. I had a mechanic do it and it has been running for another 80k so far. The motor had about 80k on it when i got it. A good wrecking yard should be able to tell you what is interchangeable.

Thanks so much for the info. From the reading I have done I understand there are several other brands of cars that have the same ecotech that can be swapped in. Some of the others being the cobalt and the g5. So before I bought another engine, I wanted to find out from those who really know. The guy listing the '09 says it fits from '06 to '11 and I knew that wasn't right. I appreciate all the info you have shared (preventing a bad purchase) and if anyone does know what off brands will/wont work I would really appreciate hearing more.

I am looking for one that bolts in, plugs in, no modifications or wiring changes. Hopefully this one is rebuildable but I want a back up plan as I was told it was knocking. Thanks

As stated above, stick with the same year 2.2l to avoid any of those design or manufacturing changes that do occur between different year models.

Also. Not exactly sure (maybe someone else can confirm ) but I think you may have to do a crank sensor relearn for the replacement engine.
