I have a 06 and love the DRL since my parking lights are on, but how can I remove the auto-light for good ? I drive a lot and even if it's sunny, the sensor on the dash isn't fully lighted so everything is dimmed in the car and headlights turn on, I want to be able to control my headlamps with my switch, no auto-on/off.

Can I ?

 

I have not worked on cars since they started putting computer chips on wheels, so I wanted to personally thank you for the one small but extremely informative sentence you posted about fuse #31 and DRL's! My wife and I bought the car in September from AAA Car Buying service. In the interim I took the car to a garage where I was told "You didn't hear it from me but if you disconnect the fuse in the middle console for the hand break it will fix the problem". NG! I wound up taking it to a Chevy dealer who had the car for 6 hours after pre ordering a computer module. After installation, the lot man drove the car up to me and my wife WITH THE LIGHTS ON! This is why I brought the car there in the first place because my wife and I were tired of seeing the headlight reflexion in the car up front at a stop light and then having to manually turn them off, hearing ding, ding ,ding and then pushing the info button. The sad part is that the Chevy dealer charged AAA Car Buying Service $804.00 parts and labor because I wasn't going to pay for it since it was a "pre existing condition"! So thanks for that one little sentence I read the other day that you posted. In Canada it's a law that the DRL's have to be on when the car is out of parking gear, but this is NOT Canada. Tools needed: 1 pair of needle nose pliers.

 

Well, one week ago I thought I had the problem with the DRL's coming on at the turn of the key....solved. Wrong. This morning I started the car while my wife was walking in front of it and the headlights came on. The slot for fuse #31 is EMPTY! Has anyone else that pulled this fuse checked their DRL's afterward? Or do I have the only '08 HHR with a 'ghost' fuse? It may work in the SS, but not in the 1LT. It looks like ChevyMgr is right. There is no way to stop the DRL's. But if someone else thinks they have another solution.......please let us know.

 

The fuse thing worked fine for me, but I have an '09. Did they stay on and not go out later? With the Autolight sensor, I've noticed that they come on at startup sometimes even when it didn't seem dark enough (overcast, etc.). They have even come on at startup when it was quite bright, but then went out shortly. I think the sensor takes about 15-20 seconds to adapt.

 

Thanks for the tip. I'll have to check on that tomorrow. Really thought I had it licked! Last week when I pulled the fuse my wife even stood in front of the car to check and they DIDN"T come on. I just hate going through that 'routine' at startup. BTW, I used to live in Garfield, NJ. That's a nice Panel you got there! The Mrs. wanted windows.

 

I know that it has been talked about in other post. What is it that you don't like about DRL that is so hard to take, that you want them off. Is it that other drivers might see you sooner Is it you think that the bulbs will last longer. Is it that youthink it is using to much power and you will get better MPG. Maybe it's just me that I don't see what all the fuss is about.

 

The fuss is about being able to CONTROL various aspects of MY car. I rode a bike for years and I'm glad they made it a law that bikes never turn their headlites off, or you really can't see them. But if you can't see a car coming at you in broad daylite, you should get off the phone, stop texting, putting on makeup, changing CD's etc. I also ran 18 wheelers for a long time and never heard another trucker complain about not being able to see the cars. And it has nothing to do with sitting higher up.

I paid for the car and I WILL figure out a way so I don't have to switch off the auto lites, listen to the ding, ding, ding and push the info button every time I turn the key. The bulbs lasting longer is a woman's concept and I never expected to get the MPG the manufacturer advertises, not even in a BMW.

 

You need to do some searching. Someone once posted that you could bend one of the plug-in terminals on one of the relays so that it would not make contact when plugged back in and the DRL lights wouldn't work. Sorry but I don't care about this subject so I am not going to go searching for that post but anyone that wants to can.

I think the lights detract from the good looks of the car. If other drivers can't see me without the DRLs, then they should pay more attention to their driving (maybe they could stop talking and texting on their cell phones). It actually does make the bulbs last longer and since it saves vehicle energy, it does get better fuel mileage.
