Hey ChevyMgr,
Please reference my post of 12/31/10 in this thread; The erratic gauges and crazy shifting occurred again; as you may recall this causing the gauges to go absolutely haywire and usually results in the DIC 'power steering' warning and very erratic shifting with the check engine and TC lights illuminated.

Have you had any luck in diagnosing this as a TCM? I believe my TCM part number is 24235767.

Any thoughts are greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Nothing yet. Still dealing with the pronblem. Would be nice if Chevy would come up with a recall before someone gets hurt out of it. Not fun to be driving along and no power steering. Getting very frustrated!

I have the same problem and I've taking my 06' to two different dealers and they both tell there is nothing wrong. It happened to me today three times while I was driving with my daughter in the car. I get a U00073 and U0742 code I've told them and all they tell me is that it is a common problem. They said they would be happy to replace the control module and torque converter to see if that fixes the problem. I'm sure they would seeing how that will cost a small fortune. GM needs to have a recall on this. This problem will eventually get someone killed.

 

I had this problem a lot last winter. From November until April it steadily got worse. It would always go away after the vehicle warmed up and restarted. Finally one day it started acting up in the middle of driving while on my way home. Once in my driveway I popped the hood and started looking for a loose connection. Nothing under the hood was making a difference so I checked out the fuse box in the passenger side of the waterfall. There is a "trunk" of wiring going from that fuse box area toward the engine compartment. I grabbed the whole group of wires and yanked them into the passenger compartment a little. The engine tone immediately changed , the gauges settled, and the clicking from the shifter area stopped. The problem has NOT recurred at all since that yank. A wire in the waterfall area must have had to much tension and was pulling loose from the fuse box or control module. I'm sorry I don't know exactly which wire but replacing the control module probably fixes the problem because the wires are pulled to plug it in.

My symptoms were loss of power steering, erratic gauges, no temp reading, clicking from shifter area, refusal to remote start, and very hard shifting. None of these symptoms have returned.

Hey guys, I'm glad I found a few other people having this bizarre problem which means my HHR is not the only possessed one, but it stinks nobody has found a difinitive solution for this problem. I agree that this should be a recall issue. Once my power steering went out and my transmission started shifting hard it really worried me since I have twins on the way. To add to that, the Chevy dealer (whom which I gave almost $20,000 to for my car) wouldn't help me at all without the $100 diagnostic charge. Believe me, I understand completely that a business needs to make money, but when you drop that kind of coin at a dealer, they should show you some love when a situation arises that is clearly not your fault. These issues should be looked at on a case by case basis.

Sorry for that jag, on to my solution:

It's been a week since my car's last freak out. I reset the computer. I found on multiple sites that this was the solution. I actually found a writeup from GM stating this problem as a "Software Anomly" and the solution was a computer reset. I did that myself and it's very easy. Like I said, it's been a solid week since the last incident so I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

Now, I am experimenting a bit because I'm noticing a trend of this only happening in cold weather to everybody. Does anybody think this could have anything to do with the remote starter? I think the only times this has happened to me was when I used my remote car start function. Since I reset my computer, I haven't used the remote starter and I'm waiting to see if it will happen when I start my car in the morning normally.

I also read somewhere that it was a bad battery that was causing this for somebody. I went to have my battery checked and they said it was bad. I replaced it and the problem went away for a month or so and then started back up again and that's when I tried the computer reset. I not ruling out the battery as the culprit, I may have a bad alternator which would explain the problem free month. Im going to pull the alternator soon and get it tested.

Whew. Wasn't expecting to write a novel on here but wanted to be as detailed as possible so that we can try and get this problem sorted out. This seems like a great community and I'm looking forward to spending some more time on the forums.

Just an FYI, you do not need to pull the alt to get it tested. you can have Autozone or the like test it for free. Just be sure that your battery is FULLY charged as a weak battery will give a false failure reading for the alt.

always check grounds with issues like these that don't seem to be related to any one part or piece of the vehicle, faulty grounds can cause some crazy problems...but it sounds like the BCM was the issue?

What the hell or more importantly where the hell is the BCM? Is this a newer tech cuz every previous car I have worked on I have never heard of or seen a "Body Control Module"?
