My motor has to replaced in my 2008 panel model and I bought a salvaged 2006 but there are two connections on the top of the engine block that were not on my 2008 and the vehicle cranks but won't turn over. Does any one know how to remedy this? Or do I have to buy another 2008 engine? Thanks

Well, hate to be the bearer of unhappy tidings, but a 2006 engine in a 2008 HHR is a no go.

The 2006 model year had enough differences in the engines and engine control systems to warrent them being considered a "stand alone" among the years of HHR production.

The rule of thumb to follow when replacing engines is to get an engine from the same model year as your HHR, I'd see if they'll allow you to swap the '06 engine for an ''08 if they have one.

I own a 2006 HHR and had to replace the engine last year. The '06 is a stand alone engine as far as HHR's are concerned. They take a different wiring harness because a bunch of different electronic sensors are used on the newer engines.

There were some other vehicles that take the same 2.2 Ecotec engine as the 2006 HHR {Saturn Vue is one and some Cobalt's} but they too are 2006 model year engines. {I'm pretty sure}

I had problems finding a compatible engine for my buggy but finally got one with a two year warranty from SWEngines for around a grand.

I'm not sure if you could get one to work for you at all in your 2008.

I'd say the chances of getting an '06 engine to run properly, if at all, in a 2008 model are less than zero.

The salvage yard that sold him the engine should have known that, but I've dealt with some salvage yards where they were hard pressed to tell a 350 Chevy from a 302 Ford.

I had an engine made in 2006 for some vehicle not an HHR installed in my old 2008.

Your description sounds like you got a 2.4L donor engine, that will not work with the harness and computer for a 2008 2.2L. I think those "connections" are the VVT valves/solenoids. All 2.4L have VVT, 2009 onward 2.2L have VVT.

I think don brew is pointing you in the right direction. If your old 2008 motor was NOT VVT- and the new 2006 motor is VVT-that could be the problem. Check also to see if the new 2006 motor has an oil cooler.

You need to find out if the 2008 motor was a 2.4 with VVT.

If the 2 connectors are on the top of the block at the far end of the passenger side of the car, then they are for the valve actuators.

If the motor is already installed you should research, adding VVT wiring and components.

I looked at the images in your profile of the 2006 motor and you can see the VVT connectors-to the left of the K& N air box,and by the intake air hose.



You really can't see them on this picture.

yes, you can on the right end of the engine, because this is the exhaust side of the motor and the other picture is from the intake or front side and they are on the left end.

In the 2 photos posted above the images are reversed. The VVT modules appear to be just to the rear of the front (on the right) overhead chain cover in the bottom photo.
