2010 HHR Shift Solenoid Question

Hello -

I have a 2010 HHR (92k miles) not shifting past 3rd gear.

I have tried battery disconnect, and new ground to the TCM which didn't help.

The check engine light is NOT on, and there are no codes to pull. The Speedometer works fine, and there is no slippage at all.

Can shift solenoids A or B go bad without throwing a code? I guess there's also a pressure control solenoid, not sure if that would cause this problem.

I don't mind doing the work to replace the solenoids, I just wish there was a definite code pointing me in that direction.

Anything else you can think of for possible cause would be appreciated.

Thanks In advance
Brian

Solenoids can fail, usually there is a code, have you checked fluid level

Going to do that next.

Was also thinking of trying to measure the resistance across the solenoids from the TCM connector, if i can find the pinouts.

Fluid level was fine. Im wondering if it may be a hard part since there is no CEL or codes to read.
I guess I don't really understand how it works. I was under the impression Solenoid A was responsible for shifting from 1st to 2nd, and B from 2nd to 3rd.
My issue is that it isn't going from 3rd to 4th (or OD), not sure if there's a 4th gear spline shaft or something I can check for and inspect?

I am NOT a trans guy.
As far as I can see, there is a 3-4 valve. It might be triggered by the accumulator, instead of a solenoid.

#319 here:

Thank you for that donbrew.

Found this which also shows that #319 as 3-4 Shift Valve

You could change them all, if you have it apart any ways, and check the fluid tube

Removing the cover is a bigger headache than expected. I can get the bottom past the frame (see photo) but the top is just not clearing the rest of the transmission (see photo).

Does the engine bay fuse box split into 2 pieces so part of it can be removed? Wanted to try getting the cover through the top.

Another option might be to remove the passenger side motor mount and try lowering everything until it clears.

Remove the passenger side transmission mount , and the two other transmission mounts, make sure you support the engine and transmission, either from the top or with a floor jack and block of wood from under the oil pan or transmission, but not that fluid pan

Thanks OldBlue, that worked and I was able to slip the cover down.
The first thing I checked was Shift Solenoids A & B, both measure about 20 ohm which appears correct.
I ordered the kit you linked from Oregon so I will change everything included.
Really hope I can find some hard evidence of what's wrong.
