Ah ha. The reason for the confusion is because you jumped into another persons thread that was discussing an automatic trans. cable problem.
Next time you should start your own thread with pertinent info such as yours is a standard shift.

Probably a broken cable. One cable works one side of the shift gate pattern. The other cable, the other side.

If the check engine light is on as you say, what is the code downloaded? (the actual code, not a verbal description)

I'll have to take it to autozone to have them tell me the codes.

Any ideas how I can replace the cables? I am going to replace both of them but dont know what parts I will need. Not much information on hhr part numbers etc.

The SS turbocharged got a different 5-speed than the non-SS, you haven't specified which trim level you have, so here's both:
SS - CABLE. Transmission Control Cable. SHIFT CONTROLS/MANUAL TRANSMISSION for Chevrolet HHR (2008 - 2010). #15939191
non-SS - CABLE. Transmission Control Cable. MANUAL TRANSMISSION SHIFT CONTROL for Chevrolet HHR (2004 - 2011). #15277760

You should look at it first, at both ends, to make sure that something just hasn't come loose.
