Hey Joe,
I had a similar concern when my son decided he wanted to buy a VW Beetle. Everyone reported all kinds of problems with them and I was hesitant.
We took our time and found a good example (a 1999 with 86K for $5K). He has been driving it for a year with no problems.
I do think that some people have ended up with lemons and others have had good success. I am personally happy with my 2008, though it does have 4-5 minor little nuisance problems. If I had spent 30K on a new car instead of 16K, I am sure it would be better built!!! But no real complaints...
