Air bag warning light

Tonight I started my car and found a warning light on saying to 'Service Airbag'. What does it mean? I drove the car, shut the engine and waited in the parking lot for my wife, then was greeted with this message when I started the engine. Nothing happened inbetween, so what could cause it?

I don't want to tell you that it's nothing, and forget about it, but my family has experienced this in the past with other Chevy models. It's one of those things that you take it to the dealer for and they can't reproduce the issue. However, you don't have to worry about the airbag randomly deploying while driving if this light comes on, rather... it suggests that the airbag may NOT deploy in the event of a collision where it normally would. At least, that's how the operator's manual describes it. You could take the time to drive it to your Chevy dealer, but unless it happens again or for a "long" period of time, I wouldn't freak out about it.

The light is constantly on. It remains on even after restarting the car. Something must have happened in the parking lot

Well I guess the only way to be sure is to take it to the dealer. They'll probably just clear the code, or whatever it is that they do to act important and earn their $95 +/- an hour in labor (that's really what my dealer charges too).

I would expect it to be covered under warranty. I have an appointment for Monday to have the rotors cut due to chatter from high speed braking. (When I called this morning, they were well aware of the problem. I will have them cut, but if it happens again, it will be time for SoCal rotors.)

I may wait, or I may try to get this checked out sooner since it would be quick.

Yeah, it will be covered under warranty. But I remember when I bought the car, the F&I woman was grilling us on the benefits of extended warranties that cover the wearable parts other than whats covered in the bumper-to-bumper warranty... something about a plastic ring in the transmission that costs all of 15 cents for the part but takes like 8 hours to replace at close to $100 an hour in labor, NOT covered under the bumper-to-bumper warranty. I passed on that. (Sorry for going off on that tangent but it IS almost 2am where I am. My mind is wandering. )

The airbag light came on with mine the day I bought it, before I even took delivery. I was actually coming out of finance when my salesman came up and offered me a Tahoe for an intermediate car till mine was fixed. The problem turned out to be a seatbelt tensioner sensor in the passenger seat. Took 2 weeks to get another one and since it was an airbag issue, I couldn’t drive it until it was fixed. Takes 20 minutes to replace, but they have to order the part since it is tagged with my VIN number and can not be taken from another HHR for replacement. The part must be programmed to the VIN since it deals with the airbag system.
