A bad sensor maybe ?

And don't overlook the obvious like something blocking the sunlight getting to the sensor.

(For those that don't know, the auto headlight sensor is that little dome shaped thing in the center of the dash by the windshield edge.)

Just the one, dead center on the top of the dash.

A failing sensor is a possibility, but it may be worth trying what has become known as a "lobotomy" on the forum.

Unhook your Negative battery cable for a minumum of five minutes to reset the BCM(Body Control Module), it controls the auto lighting along a bunch of other functions.(And I can't stress unhooking the Negative cable enough, unhooking the positive cable can cause serious damage to your vehicle's electrical components)

On occasion the BCM can go a bit goofy and odd things happen, there are times when a reset will cure the odd behavior.

"Dr. Mike prescribing another lobotomy".

Seriously though. That is a good suggestion from our Administrator. Rebooting the cars system has cured other issues that people have had. It's worth a try and it's a "free" repair.

Geez a promotion to Physician and a reduction in grade back to Moderator in one post, well it is Monday already.

Honestly I don't prescribe "lobotomies" that often, but Chevrolet didn't see fit to outfit HHR's with reset buttons, maybe they should have.

Sure you are not confusing DLR (daytime running lights) with headlight lighting..

With headlights lit, all rear & side lighting will also be lit, unlike the DRL...

well I did write in the start of this thread " I noticed it because the radio light dims when the head lights are on." so unless the radio dims with the DLR lights on which it doesn't then no I'm not confused.
