bad gas milage
#31
Here is something for your consideration. When I drive our '06 HHR regularly I always write down the odometer reading and how many gallons it takes to fill the tank. With these numbers I can calculate what my MPG really is, not just what the DIC calculates.
Doing this the manual way is not hard and my number is almost always a few more miles per gallon than the cars computer comes up with.
I average 28 to 30 MPG pretty much all the time. Now, when my kid uses the HHR for a while she rarely ever writes down the numbers needed to calculate MPG. When she does she rarely ever even gets 22 to 25 MPG a few times her MPG came out to under 15 MPG, I personally think her boyfriend put E85 in the tank because it is so much cheaper when this happens.
Running E85 in an '06 HHR will not harm the machine, it just gets crap for mileage. I don't think the '06 was actually built for E85.
So,... you might say what does this have to do with the original topic?
Well, a while back the local Casey's General store and gas station was having a problem with the delivery guy. He was putting the E85 fuel in the regular 10% ethanol tank. It took a while for them to figure it out and when they did they had a tanker come in and pump out the underground tank then had to get someone else in to test the tank and refill it.
No one knows how long this had been going on or really why, the tanks are clearly marked at the fill hole. I was buying all my gas in another town 20 miles south of here so it did not affect me.
All this took time.
